URBAN THERAPY YOGA SHOW

A brand new yoga show for the North East of England. Two days of classes, workshops, stalls, vegan & veggie food in the heart of Middlesbrough. Sat 30 & Sun 31 March 2019

WELCOME TO THE URBAN YOGA SHOW

The Urban Therapy Yoga Show is the first yoga show of its kind in the North East of England.

Located in Base Camp, a multi-purpose venue in the heart of Middlesbrough, the show features two days of yoga classes, workshops and much more. Created by Victoria Sky of Treeliving Yoga, a yoga school based in Saltburn by the Sea with classes in Middlesbrough and retreats around the world, The Urban Therapy Show illustrates how the healing power of yoga can be applied in the most urban of settings.

There are classes for absolute beginners right through to the most experienced yogis. We’ve tried to incorporate as many types of yoga as we can - from dru to yin and from kundalini to rocket yoga. There are classes for men, teens and children. And as it’s Mother’s Day on the Sunday, we also have a very special Goddess Yoga class taught by an amazing mother and daughter.

Add in a tantalising array of vegan and veggie food, lots of lovely stalls with gifts to buy and a chill out DJ session early on the Saturday evening, and it all adds up to the perfect weekend. With plenty of space to hang out and enjoy a cuppa with friends old and new, you can choose to drop in, stay for a morning or afternoon or even book yourself a weekend ticket and settle in. We look forward to welcoming each and every one of you.

PAMELA VARGAS PAEZ

Finding something that you love doing is a wonderful feeling but then to be able to do this for a living is a real special position to be in. I qualified as an Ashtanga Vinyasa Teacher a year ago and soon after I started with my Rocket TT. I have totally found my niche and passion in Rocket. I love how there is no right or wrong way of teaching the sequence. I like to teach in a way that there is no right or wrong way to the sequence, sure there is a certain sequence but the beauty of Rocket is that I can be as creative as I want with the flow.

SESSIONS

Kundalini Yoga

The body of teachings that is Yogi Bhajan’s legacy was holistic, and by no means limited to yoga exercises on a mat. He taught about yogic lifestyle and diet, shared techniques and meditations to become free of addiction and live a ‘Happy, Healthy, Holy’ life. He trained a student to master a yogic healing technique (called Sat Nam Rasayan), and sent him out to teach this to others.

His teachings inspired a student to develop an applied system of numerology, to enable healing spiritual conversations (Karam Kriya). And he spent a great deal of his time extensively sharing teachings for women: on valuing being a woman, on the shift of the Age from a male-dominated Piscean Age to the feminine Aquarian Age, on spiritual aspects of pregnancy and raising the next generation to be free and sovereign beings of the Aquarian Age.

Abode Yoga

Hot Yoga Flow

Like many exercise activities that gain rapid popularity hot yoga has been adopted and championed by celebrities, public figures and athletes for very good reason.

It strengthens the body, greatly increases flexibility and can create a deep feeling of relaxation and inner peace. Other links have also been made to the positive effects of increased blood flow and potential for detoxification.

lavender eye pillows. Suitable for all.'

MOGA

MOGA Is a yoga class geared for men (where it’s okay if you can’t touch your toes). Strong, energetic, and challenging, MOGA combines the best core-strengthening, muscle-toning, cardio-working, stress-reducing, clarity-enhancing yoga postures with an authentic and real teacher sharing his experience and journey and how he has come to find yoga helps him in everyday life.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things; yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect. In the body, the relatively stiff connective tissues (tendons, ligaments, fascia) are yin, while the more mobile and pliable muscles and blood are yang.

A Yin yoga class usually consists of a series of long-held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body - the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for up to five minutes, sometimes longer.

Yin yoga is for you if you are tired and craving energy or you’re over-stimulated and have too much energy; if your mind is overactive or your energy levels erratic.

We live in a world where we are bombarded with stimuli, stimuli that is available 24/7. It’s so easy to end up not switching off at all - to end up with a mind that is constantly busy processing all the information that’s thrown at it. Whether the information is good, valuable or rubbish, it doesn’t matter, the mind still needs to deal with it. The mind gets used to that amount of information and starts to crave stimuli if it becomes quiet. So we end up browsing, looking for stuff; it doesn’t matter what, as long as we fill the gaps. Gaps we really should allow to stay empty to find some sort of downtime - for the mind to stop and for you to just be.

Any kind of dynamic form of yoga caters to this aspect of keeping ourselves busy. Although the mind may calm down as a result of the active exercise, we are still feeding the part of us that craves intensity and wants to be stimulated. We just happen to have found ourselves a healthier stimulus! I am not saying cut out the dynamic yoga, I just think it’s a good idea to also balance all the on-the-go aspects of life and a great way to do that is through Yin Yoga.

Cacao Ceremony

Commencing by drinking together, ceremonial grade cocoa with it's heart opening qualities & it's fullness in health benefits we will dip into it's uses within ancient cultures as plant medicine. Ceremonies are a way to gather & honour life, it's transitions, ebb & flow & explore the part we play within this rich tapestry through ritual & sharing.

A powerful tool for the soul to converse with it's surroundings & self, bringing you home to your own inner rhythm. Ending in stillness with sacred sounds to soothe & settle us. Suitable for all.'

Laughter Yoga

Laughter Wellness (Yoga) is a fantastic way of keeping fit and healthy whilst having fun. It began in a park in Mumbai in 1995, led by medical Doctor Madan Kataria with just 5 participants. There are now over 10,000 laughter clubs in 100 different countries. Laughter Yoga is based on the principal that your body doesn’t recognise the difference between simulated and genuine laughter Laughter sessions start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, playing with laughter sounds, clapping and body movement. These help break down inhibitions and develop feelings of 'childlike playfulness'.

These exercises, when combined with the strong social dynamics of group behaviour, lead to prolonged and hearty genuine laughter. Laughter exercises are interspersed with yoga style breathing exercises. The impact on physical and mental wellbeing is underpinned by research. Participants in Jan’s groups have reported improvement in managing depression, COPD and asthma, pain management, hypertension, confidence and resilience. No yoga mats or lycra required. Just an open mind!

Gong Yoga

Gong yoga - it goes by many names. Substitute the word gong with sound and you have even more ways of describing this ancient practice. Like meditation, sound is trending as a healing technique because the benefits are a great complement to - and escape from - modern life. So what exactly happens during a gong session, and who can benefit? It’s a way for anyone with an active and overstimulated life to experience total relaxation - with immediate results. The power of the gong is due to the unique qualities of sound - which affect both your mind and body in a profound way.

At the mental level, the sound of the gong can induce a meditative state because it influences your brainwave activity through a process called entrainment. At the physical level, sound waves stimulate your nerve endings and travel through you, vibrating every molecule inside your body. Sound meditation has also been proven to decrease stress and anxiety, release physical tension, boost mood, and improve concentration and focus, among many other positive effects.

Rocket Yoga

Take a journey with Pam and experience Rocket, an offshoot of Ashtanga, Pam likes to make the sun salutations as creative as possible so that as well as getting the body prepared with heat there is also a boost of confidence with the fun ways she likes to put the sun salutations together.

She always encourages students to try challenging poses and if it doesn’t work out then it doesn’t matter. Breaking down the class and almost make a mini workshop on certain challenging poses. In her rocket classes Pam creates a down to earth approach and a space where there is no judgement where we can play and have fun.

SUNPOWER

Sun Power Yoga developed by Anne - Marie Newland is a beautiful sequencing of breath work and postures carried along by a spiritual uplifting soundtrack. Sun power Yoga is born of an eclectic mix of styles taking inspiration from
• Hatha yoga for theory, philosophy and classical asana
• Iyengar yoga for alignment and posturing
• Sivananda for subtle mind and breath work
• Ashtanga for heat, stamina and flexibility

The classes are a balance of breath work, posture practice and relaxation to create balance and energy flow in body, mind and spirit.
