WIGAN
CASINO'S
RUSS WINSTANLEY
Fri 27 August :Revival
Medicine Bar Middlesbrough
9pm / 18+ / £5
-
Growing up as a young Mod loving
The Beatles, Small Faces and Motown, Russ started collecting records
and became a regular at Blackpool Mecca's northern nights. Progressing
to having his own mobile disco, he filled the Wigan Rugby League
Club at Central Park two nights and one afternoon a week before
founding the legendary Wigan Casino Allnighters on 23 September
1973. Over 4 million people visited the Heart of Soul until it closed
on 6 December 1981 to make way for the extension of the Civic Centre...
which never happened!
Russ hosted three early sessions and a weekly
Allnighter at the Club and was responsible for booking the DJs
and top acts such as Jackie Wilson, Martha Reeves, Edwin Starr,
Elgins, Jnr. Walker, Betty Wright, Tommy Hunt and Major Lance.
In 1978 America's Billboard Magazine voted Wigan
Casino the World's Best Disco, beating New York's Studio 54 and
Russ was also voted the No.1 Soul DJ.
Still promoting the scene with his own marketing
and entertainments company, Russ has always DJ'd at least three
times a week and loves working in radio. In 1997, Russ compiled
Telstar Records northern soul album "Soul Survivors"
which has become the biggest selling northern soul compilation
ever grossing over £2million and in 1998, his book "Wigan
Casino Story" joined the best sellers' list. Credentials.
The Charlatans, Ocean Colour Scene and Paul
Weller frequently ask 'Mr. Wigan Casino' to DJ for them on tour.
"I've been so very lucky," smiles Russ, "The northern
soul scene, music and especially the fabulous friendships I've
made have helped it become my way of life. My radio show is such
an essential part of 'Spreading the Faith'."
Russ has also been working as a consultant
to the highly successful play about the Heart of Soul called "Once
Upon A Time In Wigan" due to be filmed soon and was also
one of the brains behind the new britflick "SoulBoy"
which opens in Cinemas across the country on Friday 27th August
- the very same day that Russ comes Middlesbrough.

TRC
& LOWER THAN ATLANTIS
Weds 22 Sept :Bad Medicine
Spensleys / Secrets Middlesbrough
9pm / 18+ / £4
-
TRC - aka The Revolution
Continues - are a thoroughly intriguing proposion, blending grime
and hardcore like nobody else! We could sit here and tell you
all about them, but we'll leave that to the pros:
"TRC combine the angst-ridden guitar thrusts and boundless
chagrin of hardcore with some grime-style rapping with, er, unique
results. Their sound is perhaps best displayed in the video for
their single Define Cocky (below). One moment they're screaming
"Fuck you, die slow", the next they're flouncing about
in sunglasses with braggadocio lyrics about their prowess over
their rivals (everyone else in the world).
TRC even cover some of the same lyrical content as their grime
counterparts - their song VIP describes them slipping on Ralph
Lauren polos and pinstriped trousers for a night hanging out in
the most exclusive sections of nightclubs. This all started when
punk band Gallows got together with indie-friendly grime boulevardier
Lethal Bizzle to cover the Ruts' Staring at the Rude Bois. Now,
I wouldn't be surprised if more bands started fusing hardcore
and grime.
Whatever you think of this stuff, be aware that there are things
much, much worse in the world of hardcore/UK dance crossovers.
I mean, have you heard Enter Shikari's dubstep material?"

PHILADELPHIA
GRAND JURY + SAVE ARCADE +
SAMANTHA DURNAN
Sat 2 Oct :Metropolis
The Empire Middlesbrough
10pm / 18+ / £6 (note
10pm early doors!)
-
Australia's Philadelphia
Grand Jury has always been two friends: Berkfinger and MC Bad
Genius. Previously knowing each other for some 20 years Berkfinger
hadn't seen Bad Genius for going on 6 years when one day the curious
bearded fellow just strolled into one of his solo shows with a
bass and plugged himself right back into the singer's life.
These two childhood buddies since had a rotating
ensemble of drummers - until recently. Joining Berkfinger and
MC Bad Genius is 54 year-old African American drummer Calvin,
who used to session drum for US disco and funk acts like Earth
Wind and Fire and bebop legend Sonny Stitt. Together they are
a self-funded, self-produced, self-engineered, self-released,
stage-destroying independent punk soul machine.
Recorded by band lead and producer Berkfinger
(who has also worked on records for Wolfmother, The Temper Trap,
Art vs Science and others) the band's recorded output displays
the engrained Do-It-Yourself nature of Philadelphia Grand Jury
at its best with comparisons to a punkier version of Elvis Costello
and regular references to The Eels and Talking Heads.
The Philly Jays (as their fans affectionately
refer to them) are exciting to watch and critics have lauded
them as "a band you must see before you die". Literally
explosive on stage their only secret is to write great songs
and play them like it's their last show ever. Every. Single.
Time.
Support from Teesside's Save Arcade. All we
can say is listen to "Tonight We Dine in Hades" on
their myspace. If that dosn't make you want to smash up your
house in a good way
then what will! Opening the show is
a set from local singstress Samantha Durnan, rocking out with
a full band on this occasion!
Be sure to check out "Going
To The Casino" on youtube,
it's a hit!

BADLY
DRAWN BOY
Weds 13 October
Arc, Stockton
7.30pm / 14+ / £17.50
(under 16s must be accompanied
by an adult)
-
Damon Gough, AKA Badly Drawn Boy, needs no introduction. The Mercury
prize winning singer songwriter has ten top 40 singles and five
top 20 albums to his name, including his soundtrack to the Nick
Hornby film "About A Boy".
Named by Q Magazine as one of 50 acts you have to see before you
die, Gough's live shows are heartfelt and intimate with his endearing
songs interspersed with the occasional spoken tale.
"Gough has something rare in the world of indie rock; he's
a superb storyteller who makes life affirming pop music. You find
yourself sitting down and listening intently to his tales and
life and love." BBC Music
"You've got to love him - and everyone here does, howling
at his Bolton-accented bon mots and pressing so close that Gough
is only visible as a woolly hat and hideous sidewhiskers. The
quality of his songs almost supports his claim to be "the
new Bono - only younger and better-looking". What Bono hasn't
got, though, is Badly Drawn Boy's intimacy." The Guardian
