THE HOOSIERS
9.10pm - 10.00pm
-
The Hoosiers first stormed the charts with their feelgood summer sounds on smash hit singles such as Worried About Ray and Goodbye Mr A, and are one of the biggest pop successes to emerge in recent years.  Debut album The Trick to Live achieved double platinum status on the way to selling over 600,000 copies in the UK alone!

And now Middlesbrough is set to get a sneak preview of The Hoosiers’ brand new sound, when they debut tracks from their hotly-anticipated new album set for release later this year.  The band have returned with a brand new sound which slots them straight into 2010 whilst firmly establishing their pop base. The Hoosiers are a band whose primary aim is to push the boundaries of pop, and the new album The Illusion of Safety does just that.  Out are the skippy beats, perky melodies, lashings of falsetto and nods to 70s soft rock that defined their previous sound, and in are synths, dancefloor-friendly beats, a dash of Giorgio Moroder and triumphant, multi-tracked choruses that recall the pomp of the Pet Shop Boys’ Go West. Sounds good to us!

“The Hoosiers are a perfect headline band for us. Great pop songs, a great live show, and a ton of charisma. Expect a massive feelgood sing-a-long set to end the day on a high.” – Graham Ramsay, Ten Feet Tall.

Forget Mylo and Calvin Harris and park your sun-kissed bum over here. 2009's Top 20 hit Watch The Sun Come Up was straight out of the Good Lookin' LTJ Bukem school of smiles and joy. Londoner Elliot Gleave (E.G. = example ... geddit?) cites the Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg as his earliest influences and, signed to Mike Skinner's label Beats, his first release Vile - a response to Lily Allen's Smile - was championed by Pete Tong and Zane Lowe [He's since kissed and made up, and toured with Ms Allen!] Last year's Ibiza-minor-key-bounce-along-with-a-piano-loop smash was followed by Won't go Quietly - an even bigger Top 10 success, and a track described by the man himself as ‘dysfunctional electro-pop’. A neat tunesmith and very hot property, catch the man himself straight from his star turn at Radio 1’s Big Weekend. A good example for us all, then...

DAISY DARES YOU
7.15pm - 7.50pm

Sweet sixteen and fresh from touring with Chipmunk, Essex girl Daisy Coburn is the queen of social networking and makes bubblegum punk - impatient, impudent teen-pop about friendship and families and fancying boys. Managed by the Lily Allen team and eyeing the Avril Lavigne throne, she’s been profiled by The Times, Guardian and the Beeb.  Sensational single Number One Enemy gatecrashed the Top 20 a few weeks ago, and second single Rosie is out now, closely followed by debut album Rush. Daisy loves Kurt, Karen O and Courtney. But, hey… she’s in touch with Robert Johnson, Lou Reed and Siouxsie Sioux, as well – Respect! Sing about what you know, give pop back to the kids, that’s the message. Fine with us…

You’ll jump. You’ll have your hands in the air. Cos Northants techno-pop / electro wunderkind brothers Ross and Ben Duffy have paid close attention to Daft Punk, Hot Chip and the Chemical Brothers. An eighties fetish? Mebbes, but so what? They’ve got cowbells, bone-shaking synth bass, and more guitar delay than The Edge… so it’s more of a live gig than seeing the usual Technics and PC World paraphernalia up there onstage. Did you catch Stop And Stare as the official Radio 1 Weekend Anthem and Greg James’ Record of the Week? Did you, did you? File next to Vitalic, Cut Copy and Das Pop. Glam-psych rad rock rules. [And they’re not even French].

TIFFANY PAGE

The arguing has already started. Is this the new Chrissie Hynde or what?  Admittedly slightly posher, this 23-year-old, Fender-wielding Londoner comes with a wild streak a mile wide, silky pipes of smoky strain and husky emotion - Shirley Manson’s kittenish meow vs Courtney Love’s lioness roar. It all started with The National Opera, appearing in Carmen – not exactly your standard rock chick stuff – but the teenage Tiffany soon discovered Nevermind, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. ‘Discovering Hole was the start of my teenage angst years’ she says. ‘That led to L7 and Babes In Toyland… I loved how these girls could sing like men. It sounded like it hurt them. That’s how I wanted to be.’  But maybe you know all this cos you caught Walk Away Slow as Fearne Cotton’s Radio 1 Single of the Week earlier this month? Regardless, we predict big things.

I AM ARROWS

I Am Arrows is the brand new solo venture from Andy Burrows, formerly the drummer with Razorlight...but don't let that put you off! Forget about Phil Collins comparisons, and check out this lovely review quote from Music Week:

"Put The Beatles in a blender with MGMT, mix with a little Elliott Smith at his more upbeat and you're getting close to Andy Burrows's rather brilliant new project." High praise indeed. As is this from The Guardian:

"A member of Razorlight has made a good record! Amazing! The results are more West Coast than west London. He's gone for a mid-to-late-70s vibe (man), his songs expertly capturing the sound of easy-listening pop'n'soul. Think Wings, Andrew Gold, or any number of bearded musos with feather-cuts from 1976-8."

KIRSTY ALMEIDA

How DO you pin this girl down? One minute a mystical folk faerie cooing folk-baroque, the next Cleo Laine, the next… eat your heart out Joan Jett. Think Florence without The Machine, Paloma Faith and, yes, la Winehouse sans all the Mark Ronson stuff. Her Youth-produced debut Pure Blue Green radiated soul-revue sensation, rock-gospel fervour and, according to the legendary producer, ‘Really well-rounded, amazing, sophisticated song-writing’. Refusing to be tied down, Mancunian Kirsty is a true eccentric, customising her instruments and stagewear, blowing audiences away with a show that alternates between female James Brown and winsome Edie Brickell. ‘I love things that sparkle’, she says, ‘I am a descendent of pirates and half my roots are blue in blood’. Whatever! What a girl, what a band, what a show. Check out the great video of her playing with her 8-piece band at http://kirstyalmeida.co.uk if you don’t believe us!.

DUKE
2.20pm - 2.55pm

Prince loves Duke! No, really he does! THE Prince! After seeing them perform at London’s Pigalle Club, the legendary Mr Rogers Nelson demanded that they support him during his stint at the O2 Arena. So it shouldn’t come as much surprise to learn that this tattoo-coated London trio have become one of the most talked-out live acts in the country.

Mixing machine-gun human beatbox with razor-sharped hip-hop rhymes and jinking, jangling guitars, Duke are currently recording their debut album with the team behind Plan B… so expect big things for later in 2010.

This show has to be seen to be believed.  Check out the videos if you want a sneak preview: myspace.com/dukeofficial

MILLIONAIRES
1.40pm - 2.10pm
-
‘Millionaires are ruining music!’ So say the anti-prom queens, the girlfriends your Mum won’t like. California rock chicks Melissa and Allison Green and Dani Artaud starting as a mess-around on Garage Band (first song “I Like Money”!) with a strong DIY work ethic, a bit of style and a willingness to put fast-talking, in-your-face songs to the public vote. Hey presto, they’re no longer a joke… this is Riot Grrrl territory, from Bikini Kill through Vixen to Avril Lavigne. These girls do not take prisoners and the three in-yer-face cuties are making the dollar go up [they’ve had 40 MILLION plays on their MySpace, so they must be doing something right!]. So get in line and pay attention, cos the filthy rich are here!

[Since they’ve come such a long way to see us, we are delighted to announce that Millionaires are following their main stage set with another appearance on the Sumo stage].

GOLDHAWKS
12.50pm - 1.30pm
-
At a motel on Highway 29, the radio in reception crackles a sweeping song of broken hearts, couples misbehaving, working class values, and the road.  Yup, we’re in Boss territory and Goldhawks could almost live next door to New Jersey’s most famous resident and arguably the world’s biggest blue-collar music spokesman.  Five Londoners wider than that huge and distant turnpike but still evoking the essence of US heartland rock - and what a refreshing change.  No Manchester indie whinny, no gonna-kill-myself-right-after-mum-makes-tea emo anguish, no blithering barn dance nu-folk; just ringing guitars, pounding piano and big old songs about reality, 1996 and running away.  The heart and soul of Springsteen, Petty Adams...and McCulloch...all rolled up into Darlington County and Sinaloa cowboys.  Born in the USA?  Maybe not, but their hearts lie over the pond.  Now where’s that Joshua Tree?

YOUNG REBEL SET
12.00pm - 12.30pm

Ha! A band that polarises opinion, there’s nothing quite like it! And folks definitely have opinions on Young Rebel Set. NME loves them – no, come back! – but the quality press is split down the middle. One half is disturbed that a seven-piece from Teesside can produce such blue-collar authenticity (see Springsteen, The Hold Steady) and heartstring-tugging tunes like If I Was and Won’t Get Up Again. The other miserable lot, clinging to the eighties, are still mourning The Clash and Dexys and carefully cataloguing their Bruno Brookes Chart Show cassettes. Get over yourselves and get behind a great new band! What’s wrong with singing about life and love, hard luck and romance against the odds? Welcome home boys – it’s good to have you back!
