SUMO EVERY FRIDAY:
a word from our sponsors…
-
We started SUMO five years ago in the back room of the Cornerhouse - a labyrinth-like maze, soaked in history [Biffy, Muse, Libs, Frank Black…] & dead right for what would become the multi-room monster it is today…
We do Rock, Punk, Indie, Metal, Pop, Motown, Rock n Roll. And barmy one-off theme parties [including the world famous Xmas Beach fiascos]. Plus occasional epic gigs [The Cribs, Nick Oliveri, The Big Pink, Noisettes, Skid Row?!] We’ve got FIVE bars! The drinks have always been on the reasonable side, and we keep them fun - pint cocktails in eye-watering colours anyone!? Plus super lovely door staff, with a tight-as-you-like entry policy.
We’re still here. We’re still awesome. We’ll see you Friday.

THE BLACKOUT
9.00pm - 9.50pm
-
Massive choruses, huge riffs and some of the catchiest post-hardcore anthems you're ever likely to hear - the Blackout stand proudly side by side with their Welsh brethren Funeral for a Friend, Kids in Glass Houses and Lost Prophets. Signed to legendary punk label Epitaph (Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio, Set Your Goals et al), this high-octane sextet have adorned the cover of every rock mag you can think of…and well, let’s not beat around the bush, they’re the biggest rock stage headliner we’ve ever had!
“Super catchy screamo anthems and infectious energy” – Kerrang!

YOUNG GUNS
8.00pm - 8.40pm
-
These hotly-tipped Surrey rock kids have just been confirmed for the main stage at Leeds & Reading and have also recently toured with Lost Prophets, Taking Back Sunday and The Used. How about that for a bit of choice name-dropping!? Add to that a prime slot at Slam Dunk and the latest Kerrang tour [with All Time Low and, coincidentally, The Blackout and My Passsion], and you can see that they’re making noises in all the right places. And what of that noise!? Think 'Start Something' era Lost Prophets with the bonus of extra-chunky metal riffs.

MY PASSION
7.00pm - 7.40pm
-
Goth-inspired new wavers My Passion had about as good a start to a year as any rock band could have; they scored their first Kerrang! cover feature and barely hours into the new year were already being described as "the stars of 2010" by the aforementioned rock bible. Coming across like a hybrid of AFI, Mindless Self Indulgence and, dare we say it, Enter Shikari, they've been described as "contagious horror-pop wrapped up in nightmare despair and sinfully sonic electro shock" by Rock Sound. That’ll do nicely, then.
"Packed full of sleazy grooves, sultry electronica and choruses handed to them from the gods of rock 'n' roll themselves" - Kerrang!

SYLOSIS
6.00pm - 6.40pm
-
Forward-thinking UK thrash metallers, as seen supporting the mighty Dragonforce. The band aim to create a modern take on the old-school thrash blueprint, and have created a distinctive sound comprised of aggressive riffs, thunderous drumming, intricate guitar lines, shredding solos, fierce vocals and haunting ambience…plus an unashamed abundance of melody. If you didn’t think there was such a thing as melodic death metal... guess what!? There is!

FLOOD
OF RED
5.10pm - 5.40pm
-
The slot that was advertised as Millionaires
on the Sumo Rock Stage has been filled by legendary Glaswegian post-hardcore
mob Flood Of Red. No strangers to Boro, theyve toured the
world for the past 10 years in an ex-police riot van, and its
our pleasure to have them complete the line up of the Sumo Rock
Stage, that looks like it could be the best ever!

THE BLACK SPIDERS
4.15pm - 4.50pm
-
We love the Black Spiders and their AC/DC meets Black Sabbath ROCK! We’re not the only people to love them either:
“Absolutely the best rock band I’ve ever heard. I love this band, they're going to be massive!” - Daniel P. Carter, Radio 1 Rock Show.
"Great vocals, monstrous guitar solos and relentless drumbeats.... these sleaze rockers are all about bringing back the good old badass days of rock and roll" - Big Cheese.
“Rock Warriors.....soon to be cult heroes…for fans of Black Sabbath, AC/DC and TurboNegro." - Kerrang!

THE FLATLINERS
3.20pm - 3.55pm
-
As soon as we heard that these brilliant Canadian punk rockers were in the UK in June, we pounced! Signed to NOFX’s infamous Fat Wreck Chords label, they've been favourites of ours for years now. During those years, the Flatliners have spent endless months in vans, dive bars, and concert halls across North America, Europe and Asia, building up a dedicated following with a sound that mixes the endless fury of ‘90s skate punk with the nuanced, intelligent songwriting of classic post-punks like the Replacements and Hot Water Music. Add to that elements of grime, ska and reggae and you’ve got yourself a truly vital band.

FUTURES
2.25pm - 3.00pm
-
It seems a bit lazy to compare Futures to American emo legends Jimmy Eat World, given that the former share their name with one of the latter’s albums. That said, it’s a pretty accurate comparison! Fresh from Slam Dunk and tours with Boys Like Girls and Kids in Glass Houses, Futures have been winning themselves some amazing reviews of late:
“Gloriously uplifting tunes. KKKK” – Kerrang!
“It’s gorgeous, it’s rocking and it paints Futures as a very exciting prospect indeed. 9/10” - Rock Sound

THE PLIGHT
1.30pm - 2.05pm
-
The Plight caused a storm with their mini album Black Summer (8/10 Rock Sound, 4/5 Kerrang!), unleashing upon the world a CD full of riffs, good-time rock n roll…and pure unadulterated potential. The marriage of heavy punk and classic rock has rarely been heard used so effectively - immediately drawing widespread praise, and press comparisons to heavyweights like The Bronx and Motorhead. Expect one part screaming hardcore, one part classic rock, and one part gutter metal. You might have even heard them, bizarrely, soundtracking the new Lucozade advert!

LIFELESS
12.45pm - 1.15pm
-
Terrorizer described Lifeless as "the most exciting new UK Thrash band of 2009" when giving their explosive debut album Full Chill a rather splendid 9/10 review. Fans of Slayer, SSS, Municipal Waste and early Beastie Boys may well be about to discover their new favourite band. With an ever-burgeoning reputation for their incendiary live shows, this is a band not to be missed.
"Some mean shredding and seriously lairy lyrics, Lifeless deliver their goods with snot-splattered energy...GET IN!” – Kerrang!

HEY ALASKA
12.00pm - 12.30pm
-
Formerly known as The Scarlet Desire, Hey! Alaska have been one of the leading lights on the Teesside music scene for the past 18 months. Recent winners of an Atticus competition to support Madina Lake and We are the Ocean at Nottingham Rock City, they’ve taken their post-hardcore pop-punk all over the UK alongside the likes of You Me at Six, Flood of Red and Poison the Well. Combining elements of Set Your Goals, Alexisonfire and Enter Shikari, they are your saviours!
