THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
8.20pm - 8.50pm
-

In the middle of a concerted push for world domination, and freshly-returned from touring Japan…we’re thrilled that at the last minute we managed to twist the arm of Teesside’s hottest musical export and persuade them to make a rare festival appearance on home turf.

Initial singles Kids and Virgins have cemented their place as the black-hearted overlords of angst-ridden, thrill-laden post-punk mayhem, and their live shows are the stuff of legend – incendiary and ferocious, with charismatic frontman Kingsley swiftly becoming the new spokesman for a disillusioned generation.‘Music that could change your life’ – NME.

EXIT CALM
7.10pm - 7.40pm
-
If there’s a Verve-shaped hole in your heart, then guitar-toting Sheffield fourpiece Exit Calm might just be the answer. New single Hearts and Minds has caused a bit of a fuss, and even The Sun made it their Single of the Week, calling it ‘epic cinematic rock music which has the strength to pull off mass appeal’.

And they’re not alone… ‘Ragged vocals and swathes of widescreen guitar effects… a penchant for all things epic’ – Q Magazine; ‘You will witness something that leaves you speechless and transfixed’ – Gigwise; ‘Immensely focused, with ferocious intensity’ – Drowned In Sound.Get the picture?

THE NEAT
6.00pm - 6.30pm
-
In Youth Is Pleasure! In Youth Is Pleasure! In Youth Is Pleasure! Once heard, it’s difficult to get The Neat’s new single out of your head… still, who would want to? It’s a short, sharp injection of sneery thrills, where the Buzzcocks’ angular chainsaw guitars meet the spitting, ferocious wordsmithery of The Fall.

Yes, The Fall… who’d have thought that four skinny misfits from Hull could conjure up Mark E Smiths machine-gun, pop-culture-raking intensity with such fervour? It put a proper smile on our face when we stumbled across these – hope you like ‘em too!

‘Snotty-as-a hooter-in-a-gale-force-wind agit post-punk’ – NME;

‘A startling debut, full of dark, discordant art-pop promise’ – Sunday Times

JESSIE ROSE TRIP
4.40pm -5.10pm
-
If you’ve not done so already, treat yourself to the latest Jesse Rose Trip single You Won’t Forget Me Boy – possibly the most thrilling slice of pop-soul angst you’ll hear this year… like Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl being hollered by Amy Winehouse while a band of Manchester soul-boys do their finest Dap Kings impersonation in the background.

And Jesse herself is undoubtedly a star in the making – a hyperactive 22-year-old who looks as though she’s stumbled from an explosion in an early 80s charity shop. ‘Quicksilver brilliant and cool idiosyncrasy’ – Manchester Evening News; ‘Think Lily Allen sitting on Amy Winehouse’s face whilst she’s shredding a Fender Jag like Hendrix’ – Common People Magazine

GLORIA CYCLES
3.30pm - 4.00pm
-
What would happen if you took the wistful, indie tunefulness of Belle and Sebastian, relocated it to a holiday home in Brighton, pumped it full of Sunny Delight and let it loose in a roomful of toy guitars and vintage synths? Probably something akin to Gloria Cycles, whose debut album Campsite Discotheque is a bouncy pop delight.

‘As enjoyable as watching the rain pour down on everything from the comfort of your own log fire-emblazoned cottage. Few records contain as much heart, humour and basic silliness’ – Artrocker

RETRIEVER
2.25pm - 2.55pm
-
Take a big slab of Joy Division, a tasty chunk of early Jesus and Mary Chain and just a pinch of Siouxsie and The Banshees… Retriever are three cool-as-you-like Geordies, fronted by glowering ice maiden Jackie Miller, whose withering, spine-freezing vocals wander restlessly over a wall of fuzzed-up distortion.

‘One of Newcastle’s finest bands… a chrome wall of pure rock n roll essence’ – NARC; ‘A white-hot salvo… exceptional’ – Rob Nichols, Evening Gazette

ANDY JONES AND
THE NORTON ROCKETS

1.20pm - 1.50pm
-
It seems cheeky to describe the still-youthful Mr Jones as a veteran of the Teesside music scene, but he’s certainly packed a lot into his amazing musical magpie career… frontman with mod legends 1941, before a lengthy sojourn to Valencia and an amazing reinvention as a flamenco-drenched solo troubadour.

And now he’s back as the frontman of a stomping beat combo… except – wait for it – he’s also the drummer! Expect thumping ELO-esque epic pop, soaring vocals and thoughtful, brilliant songwriting from this modest pop genius, whose new album Are We There Yet? is the missing link between 10CC and Duke Special.
