Having spent most of the 1990s as a bona fide indie
celebrity with Welsh psychedelic wizards Gorky's Zygotic Mynci,
Euros Childs has gone it alone and is quietly confirming his
reputation as one of the UK's best pop songwriters. New album
Bore Da certainly looks like proof positive of genius at work.
Expect a show that is playful and idiosyncratic, with lyrics
delivered in both English and in Welsh. All this wrapped up
in
|
|
vintage, feel-good pop melodies that make Abbey Road sound
like Metal Machine Music.
'Captivating
lyrical subject matter varying from the
joy experienced by Euros' niece on receiving a new pair
of orange sandals, to a cross-dressing half-man-half-cockerel
figure wrestling with his own shadow while drinking black
blood and preparing himself a baby sandwich' - The Guardian

What do members of The Polyphonic Spree do when it's
time to take off their trademark robes? In the case of Dallas
singer and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, she signs to
Beggars Banquet and creates a luscious and captivating collection
of art-folk songs that bring to mind Regina Spektor, Cat Power
and Joanna Newsome at their very best. There's also a touch
of vintage Patti Smith and classic PJ Harvey in there too,
alongside a subtle hint of Captain Beefheart-style eccentricity
|
|
One of the
stars of SXSW this year in Texas, Annie was last seen in the
UK at the end of 2006 supporting Sufjan Stevens (for whom
she also plays guitar) and comes to us direct from the hipper-than-hip
Homefires festival and solo dates supporting Arcade Fire.

These four wide-eyed youngsters hail from Glasgow, and their

vocals and soul-touching lyrics |

Frank Turner's career path has been less than obvious
- from early days at Eton, to a spell at the London School
of Economics, then on to front influential punk rockers Million
Dead. His new direction, though - as a brilliant, razor-voiced
Billy Bragg for the Noughties generation - is a gear change
that would give even Jeremy Clarkson nightmares.
Never one to shirk a bit of hard work, Frank's extensive gigging
schedule has seen him play all over the world - from Tallin
to Texas to Tunbridge Wells,
|
|
touring with the likes of The Automatic, Get Cape Wear
Cape Fly and Biffy Clyro along the way.
His critically acclaimed debut album 'Sleep Is For The Week'
is out now on Xtra Mile Recordings - home of Teesside's
very own DARTZ!

Purveyor of vintage psychedelic Americana, Hush Arbors
is effectively one-man folk implosion Keith Wood - a man whose
career has been defined by secrecy. We know that he hails
from Missouri. Other than that, no age, no location, no rambling
CV - just a pair of sad eyes peering from beneath a floppy-brimmed
hat and some of the maddest, trippiest hippy- tinged folk
you'll ever hear.

Think Syd Barrett, think 13th Floor Elevators, all mixed
in with some Grateful Dead and a dash of Big Pink-era Band.
And what more would you expect from someone who describes
himself as having 'one foot in the forest and one on the
log fire?"
'Simple and beautiful - feet on the ground, eyes on the
sky' - Dusted

One of the finest performers to come out of this
area for many a year - we are delighted to welcome Elaine
Palmer back to the festival.
Her career continues to move from strength to strength. Having
effortlessly made the transition from local superstar to national
acclaim, she is set to consolidate the success of brilliant
2006 album Waves by releasing three new EPs, which will no
doubt once again find their way back onto some of
|
|
the most influential playlists in the country - Bob Harris
and Mark Radcliffe are already avowed fans.
Expect sensitive, heart-felt folk stylings that bring to
mind
well, everyone you'd ever want them to. Joni
Mitchell, Nick Drake, Neil Young - they're all in there,
alongside a host of more obscure and intriguing influences.
'A fine troubadour, like Beth Orton at her most ethereal'

The enchanting Mr Wetherill is a real cult hero on
Teesside these days, bringing his collection of vintage folk
and ukulele singalongs to ever-expanding audiences.
One minute he'll break your heart with a 30s blues ballad,
the next he'll be spinning your head by throwing in a bit
of classic George Formby. All delivered in collars stiff enough
to shave with.

They've got sitars and sinister chanting! And great
slabs of psychedelic, bad-trip-folk-rock that sound like Jim
Morrison wrestling with Lou Reed while The Incredible String
Band tune up in the background
|
|
Utterly mesmerising, and some of the most powerful, heart-stopping
noises you'll ever hear on an acoustic stage. Not bad for
a band seemingly named after a bizarre Western movie with
a cast made up entirely of drag racers!

Effortlessly constructing experimental, wonky folk-pop
from her secret Newcastle base, Beth cites Nico, Simon &

After two full years of studio tinkering, Manchester's
Magic Arm have just released their debut EP, Outdoor Games.
It's a thing of great beauty indeed, boasting sinister pop,
sparkling psyche gems, Beach Boys influenced rockers, and
ballads that would make Jose Gonzalez weep. Main man Marc
Rigelsford is an enigmatic

performer
and looks set to claim the vacant Beta Band crown for brilliant,
skew-whiff, folk-pop.

Local heroes Andy Jones and Darren Reay have joined
forces to create this blissed-out duo who present a brand
of delicate psyche-tinged that wouldn't have sounded out of
place sandwiched between Jethro Tull and Donovan at the original
Isle Of Wight Festival.
Their debut album Road Trip - with dulcimers, harmoniums,
Portuguese guitaras, even Tibetan singing bowls, thrown into
the mix - is the perfect soundtrack to a mellow summer's day.

'Imagine
the Beta Band or maybe more accurately their successors The
Aliens, a smattering of The Incredible String Band, Bob Dylan
battling it out on his soap box with Neil Young and some West
Coast '60s folksy psychedelia all dressed up in 21st century
garb
This will take some beating as the album of 2007'

An indecently talented teenage writer-performer with
an impeccable record collection and a penchant for quality
knitwear, Chris Duggan has been causing huge waves on the
local scene this year.
With a striking Bolan-esque warble, fingerpicking that

would make
Bert Jansch lick his lips and a hint of Tim Buckley in his
self-penned tunes, Chris is both bold and sensitive with a
fine line in blackly comic lyrics.
